Why do women have lower pensions in Switzerland?

Women’s pensions are lower in Switzerland due to lower incomes and greater use of part-time work. How can we correct this injustice? By Edouard Bolleter.

The pension situation for working women in Switzerland is worrying. There are indisputable figures to support the fact that wage inequalities between the sexes are perpetuated, if not increased, by the current pension system. And this is another important element in the fight for equality, highlighted in June by the one-day strike dedicated to the cause of women. These unfair conditions are not likely to improve overnight, it would seem. “In fact, in Switzerland, only some 50% of working women make regular Pillar 3a contributions. At 58%, men are far more likely to contribute to tied pension plans,” notes Emilie Gachet, economist at Credit Suisse.
